Bradford Woods is offering free weekend retreats for military families through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs TANF Program. Participants simply register with Adryanne Bonner from the TANF program and she will provide the voucher and facilitate the process of signing up and securing reservations. The program is called Family Battle Buddies and it aims to enhance family functioning through shared recreation experiences in a weekend retreat format. The retreat includes challenge activities, recreation, and purposeful activities for families to discover and develop skills to successfully navigate reintegration challenges. Recreation therapists accomplish family resiliency and strong familial bonds through systematic experiential learning through ground initiatives, low and high ropes courses, equine assisted learning, art interventions, and shared family leisure experiences. Families are guided through a series of experiential learning activities that serve as metaphors for the challenges they are currently experiencing. All activities are designed to be fun, engaging, and applicable to real life. Eligible families are military members who have experienced active duty.
The family belief systems used at Bradford Woods looks at:
- Accomplishing meaning out of adversity and how to persevere
- Knowing how to keep a positive outlook by focusing on the family’s strengths and potential
- Remaining flexible and adapting to new circumstances
- Learning how to connect and support one another based on the individual needs of the family member
- Understanding a purpose to all transformation and growth
- Utilizing outside resources to strengthen and balance the family, such as friends and extended family Program
Families will stay at Bradford Woods’ Historic Manor House, Agape Lodge, or Ryan Cottage and engage in family programming throughout the weekend. Enjoy time with other military families while engaging in meaningful family recreation.
Parents or guardians and children 4-20 years old with at least one parent or guardian that has experienced active duty. Application is required.
The goal of the program is to build a network of social support between military families by engaging in meaningful family recreation while exploring ways to build family togetherness post reintegration.
