Melanie came to Bradford Woods in 2008 as Director of Adventure Education. She is passionate about seeing individuals and groups grow into great leaders through the amazing environment provided at Bradford Woods. Why? Because getting out of daily routines creates opportunity for real growth: whether for kids or adults. Melanie graduated from Valparaiso University with a BA in International Economics and Cultural Affairs focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean. Yes, she speaks Spanish! She spent time in the Caribbean helping schools rebuild and add computer systems. She later had opportunities to work in education more directly by teaching outdoor education, facilitating challenge courses and teambuilding programs, and leading mission trips. She currently holds an EMT-B certification, Wilderness First Responder, is a reserve member of a fire department, helps teach EMT lab at IU and plans to start her Master’s in Public Health MPH in the next year. Melanie believes that staying active in the outdoors is a key component to personal health and wellness.
You will often find Melanie in the Woods checking out the plants and trees, birds and insects, waterways and prairies. Her dog Josie loves to go on adventures too! In her spare time, Melanie loves to spend time with family and friends including her 12 nieces and nephews and 1 great niece! Favorite times also include being out on a canoe or kayak on flat water, hiking or biking the hills, digging into a good book like Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer or cooking a great meal.
