Program Positions
JOB TITLE: PROFESSIONAL OUTDOOR INSTRUCTOR
Description of Position:
Teach environmental education modules based on established curriculum, lead recreational activities, and conduct evening activities during assigned Environmental Education program. Facilitate group icebreakers, initiatives, and ropes/challenge course events (high and low), and conduct evening activities during assigned Adventure Education Center programs. Support and lead recreational programs for youth and adults with disabilities during assigned Therapeutic Recreation programs. Support welcoming and hosting retreats groups and those visiting Bradford Woods as part of a conference or workshop on an ‘as needed’ basis. Complete reports, schedules, lesson or program plans, and other paperwork as assigned. Assist with inspection of cabins and program areas. Conduct ongoing equipment checks to insure optimal safety of staff and participants. Follow all policies and procedures regarding the use of elements, equipment, property and facilities as developed by Bradford Woods.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach environmental education modules based on established curriculum to elementary school students
- Facilitate adventure programs promoting teambuilding, leadership and personal development. Includes use of ground-based initiatives, low and high ropes challenge elements
- Act as counselor/instructor for children and adults with disabilities in summer & week-end therapeutic camping programs
- Lead and support recreational activities and conduct evening programs
- Coordinate, welcome and host retreat groups
- Design, plan and assist coordinating programs
- Facilitate activities and programs for elementary, middle and high school age participants as well as university students, corporate groups and other adults
- Perform administrative duties such as completing program reports, incident reports, etc
Qualifications:
- Ability and desire to energetically teach, inspire and motivate students and participants
- Ability and willingness to learn and master designated program areas
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment for an extended time that can be emotionally and physically demanding – as well as rewarding!.
- Ability and willingness to serve others, be a team player and take on leadership roles and responsibilities
Knowledge and Skills Desired:
- University degree in outdoor, experiential, therapeutic recreation or related field
- Outdoor skills: Hiking, backpacking, caving, canoeing, climbing, etc
- Experience facilitating personal and group development through initiatives and low/high challenge course events
- Experience teaching environmental education
- Experience in camp settings
- Experience working with people with physical and developmental disabilities
- First Aid & CPR certification; lifeguard certification
- Drivers license

- $250.00 per week plus room and partial board

Position Details:
Outdoor Instructors are required to attend the training program. Housing is provided for the duration of employment. Meals are provided only during program, i.e. while working with a program to which one has been assigned. Most meals will be provided during the training program, but some meals will still be the responsibility of the employee. Since Bradford Woods operates on a seven day per week schedule, days working may vary. All Outdoor Instructors are covered by the Indiana University worker’s compensation policy.
