JOB TITLE:  OUTDOOR INSTRUCTOR I

Description of Position:
Teach environmental education modules based on established curriculum, lead recreational activities, and conduct evening activities during assigned Environmental Resource Center (ERC) programs. Facilitate group icebreakers, initiatives, and ropes/challenge course events (high and low), and conduct evening activities during assigned Challenge Education Center (CEC) programs. Support and lead recreational programs for youth and adults with disabilities during assigned Camping and Retreats (CRC) programs. Support welcoming and hosting retreats groups and those visiting Bradford Woods as part of a conference or workshop on an ‘as needed’ basis. Complete reports, schedules, lesson or program plans, and other paperwork as assigned. Assist with inspection of cabins and program areas. Conduct ongoing equipment checks to insure optimal safety of staff and participants. Follow all policies and procedures regarding the use of elements, equipment, property and facilities as developed by Bradford Woods.

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Facilitate, teach, and instruct in areas of environmental education, challenge education and recreational programs
  • Work with diverse and dynamic populations
  • Complete reports, schedules, lesson or program plans, and other paperwork as assigned.
  • Assist with inspection of cabins and program areas.
  • Conduct ongoing equipment checks to insure optimal safety of staff and participants.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School degree. Undergraduate and/or graduate students or degrees in Outdoor Education, Recreation, Environmental Education, Park and Resource Management, Education, Social Work, and related fields preferred.
  • Experience and interest in program development and implementation.
  • Strong organizational, management, and creative programming skills

Salary/Benefits:

  • $180.00 per week plus room and board (meals provided during program times)

Position Details:
Outdoor Instructors are required to attend the training program. Fifty percent of weekly wage will be paid during the training period. Housing is provided for the duration of employment. Meals are provided only during program, i.e. while working with a program to which one has been assigned. Most meals will be provided during the training program, but some meals will still be the responsibility of the employee. Since Bradford Woods operates on a seven day per week schedule, days working may vary. All Outdoor Instructors are covered by the Indiana University worker’s compensation policy.

 

Dates of Employment:
  • Seasonal Position. 3 month to 9 month positions begin in February, June, or August

 

JOB TITLE:  OUTDOOR INSTRUCTOR II

 Description of Position:

This position will follow an intensive leadership paradigm and will culminate in receipt of a Professional Field Instructor Certification from Bradford Woods. Unlike the 3 month position, there will be enhanced focus on professional growth of self and mentoring of others. Additional required trainings, in-services, and projects will be determined on both an individual and group basis to support these elevated goals and objectives.

  • Must have a solid foundation in planning, organizing and leading field and/or classroom experiences in environmental education, interpretation, and natural sciences and/or leading groups through adventure activities.
  • Minimum one year experience leading groups in outdoor programming preferred
  • Experience and interest in program development and implementation.
  • Strong organizational, management, and creative programming skills

In addition to duties and assignments outlined by university requirements, the intern position will gain experience in aspects of an outdoor instructor position. Opportunities will be provided in both shadowing and leading programs. Facilitate group icebreakers, initiatives, and ropes/challenge course events (high and low), and conduct evening activities during assigned Challenge Education Center (CEC) programs. Support and lead recreational programs for youth and adults with disabilities during assigned Camping and Retreats (CRC) programs.
